In Seaby's Catalogue of Ulster Tokens Tickets ... first published
in the Ulster Journal Of Archaeology, Vol. 34, 1971, pp. 96-106 and
later reprinted in the magazine Irish Numismatics, item AN:B86 was
illustrated and described as follows;
The following gives some background, and describes where the meetings were held. This is from a book entitled AS I ROVED OUT - A Book of the North subtitled Being a Series of Historical Sketches of Ulster and Old Belfast, pp. 229-230, dated 1946 and was printed by Irish News Ltd., Donegal Street Belfast. (By Cathal O'Byrne) May Street and its Music Hall.
The Union Foundry and May Street Iron Foundry were situated near its east end, and the old street could also boast of a school - May Street National School - a square, white-washed building, which had for Master, in 1861, one Denis Donnegan. An agricultural implement manufacturer had only the width of Seymour Street between him and a dressmaking concern, and grocers, builders and bell-hangers were ranged cheek by jowl with veterinary and posting establishments in all the glory of their imposing offices and stables.

From about the year 1839 the tide of social life in Belfast converged on May Street where, in the Music Hall balls, routs, soirees and concerts were held. The meetings of the Belfast Anacreontic Society, founded for the general cultivation of vocal and instrumental music, were so numerously attended, and its concerts became so popular that it was found necessary to build a Concert Hall. Accordingly, the members of this Society proceeded to erect the music hall at the corner of Arthur Street - it is now the Victoria Memorial Hall - a handsome and capacious building in the Doric style of architecture. The portico consists of two handsome columns, supporting an entablature, and the entrance is approached by a flight of steps. The hall, which affords accommodation for about 800 persons, was opened in the year 1839 by a grand concert at which a young artist Catherine Hayes of Limerick, who later was to become one of the world's greatest prima donnas, made one of her earliest appearances as a public singer.

The ballroom of Dublin Castle was, in the reign of Elizabeth, used for private theatricals by the nobility. A theatre was built in Werburgh Street in 1635 and another in Smock Alley 1662 which building some nine years later collapsed during a performance killing a number of persons. The Theatre Royal, Crow St. was opened in 1758 and the Little Theatre in Fishamble Street end of 18th C.

Dr T. C. S. Corry issued a series of metal tickets bearing this 'motto'. Batty in his Ireland Misc. section records one, B3929, Dr Toscorry (sic) in pewter.
Davis and Waters in the Gardens Shows and Exhibitions section record four, DW84-87, including the Batty piece in brass and lead. One of the pieces DW84, was a season ticket for two people. The weakness of full stops on the circular piece explains Batty's misreading. It is uncertain whether these are passes or advertising pieces. The following article throws some light on the issuer. Although it is uncertain whether the tickets were issued for use in Belfast, his strong links with Belfast means they should perhaps be included in any Belfast listings.
The following is from a book entitled AS I ROVED OUT - A Book of the North subtitled Being a Series of Historical Sketches of Ulster and Old Belfast, pp. 166-168, dated 1946 and was printed by Irish News Ltd., Donegal Street Belfast. By Cathal O'Byrne.
Ireland's First Moving Pictures. As we write there lies before us a programme of Ireland's first moving picture show. According to the superscription, it was compiled by T. C. S. Corry, M.D., Fell.Roy.Med.Chir.Soc.Lond., and was printed by Hodges Foster and Figgis, 104 Grafton Street, Dublin, Booksellers and Publishers to the University. Published exactly sixty-four years ago - a picture of the Rock of Cashel is given on the cover - it is entitled `Ireland. Its Scenery, Music, and Antiquities.' Containing thirty pages with numerous advertisements it is made up of descriptions of Ireland's most noted beauty spots and places of interest situated in each of the thirty-two counties, from Antrim to Kerry and from Dublin Bay to Galway. The programme also contains seven pages of Irish songs, melodies and choruses, from which a selection was made and sung by distinguished artistes during the evening. `Dr. Corry's Diorama' or Moving Pictures consisted of reams and reams of canvas painted with scenes familiar to Irishmen everywhere - The Giant's Causeway, Shane's Castle, Carrick-a-rede, Dunluce Castle, Galway City, Limerick City, Drogheda, Armagh, Tara, Dublin City, Belfast, Glendalough, the Vale of Avoca, Waterford, Cork City, Blarney Castle, the Lakes of Killarney, the Gap of Dunloe, Glengariff and many others. The painted canvas was attached to great rollers situated at each side of the proscenium out of view of the audience and as it was unrolled it passed across the stage showing the pictures, and as certain scenes were shown appropriate songs were sung and musical items given. Ireland's foremost singer of that day was Nellie Hayes and her song, `Who'll Buy a Box of Specimens ? ' written by Dr. Corry and sung by her while the picture of the Giant's Causeway was being shown, was a great favourite.
`Who'll buy a box of specimens just gathered from the strand ?
I've Irish diamonds fit to deck the proudest in the land,
With amethysts and jaspar, too, that sparkles in the light,
And gems that dance like ladies' eyes with lustre rare and bright;
The price is only half-a-crown, I really wish to sell;
Do buy a box of specimens from Little Irish Nell.
Then buy a box of specimens and take me for your guide,
I'll point you all that's to be seen along the Causeway side;
I'll lead you to the magic well, and to the Giant's Chair
And all will surely come to pass you wish when seated there.
Who'll give a shilling for a box, I really wish to sell,
So buy a box of specimens from Little Irish Nell.'
Come, buy a box of specimens-when you are far away,
They'll call to mind the fairy scenes you've wandered o'er to-day,
In poor neglected Ireland, where beauties rare lie hid,
Like the bright gems in darkness here concealed beneath this lid.
Then, buy a box of specimens - indeed, I wish to sell,
Your kind applause is now the price; encourage Little Nell.'
---
Boxes of specimens, shells, bits of amethyst and jaspar were sold to visitors by the guides at the Causeway in those days. The price asked being about two and sixpence early in the day, but as the evening advanced and sales became less frequent, the cost of the box was proportionately reduced.
The entertainment thus described was Ireland's first attempt at a moving picture show, and just how successful it proved to be may be inferred from the fact that it was given, not only in every city and town in Ireland, Scotland and England, but with it Dr. Corry, its owner and inventor, made an enormously successful tour of the United States of America.
Sixty years ago Dr. T. C. S. Corry was a well known figure in the streets of Belfast. His home was at the corner of Donegall Pass and Ormeau Road - the house is at the moment occupied by another distinguished member of the medical profession - and his pharmacy at the corner of Church Lane and Chichester Street. Dr. Corry, as well as being a medical man, was a born showman. He was also a writer of distinction, and in 1879 published a volume of `Irish Lyrics, Songs and Poems.'
The book was printed in Belfast by D. and J. Allen, at William Street South, and was dedicated to Dr. Madden, author of `The Lives and Times of the United Irishmen.'
Born in Belfast, in Ulster of the Nine Counties, Dr. Corry was no provincial. He was an Irishman who was proud of his country, every inch of it, and gave honour to those who served in any capacity. His book contains, amongst other beautiful things, an `Ode to Mary McCracken,' the devoted sister of Henry Joy McCracken, who commanded the United Irishmen at the Battle of Antrim on the 7th June, 1798. The poem ends:
---
`Now she is gone and severed is the Chain
Which linked our generation to the past ;
The stricken and oppressed no more shall hear
A voice that soothed so oft the bed of woe ;
But though `tis hushed, a record still survives
Shrined in the Annals of a Nation's wrongs,
Where Erin's daughters yet unborn may trace
A type of all in woman, good and great.'
----
Another of Dr Corry's poems is written on - of all places - `The Belfast
Workhouse' and to it is appended the following note :
'During the winter of 1877 the inhabitants of the town were much shocked and scandalised by revelations made at their local Board of Guardians, disclosing the fact that great social austerity was exercised towards the unfortunate inmates of the Workhouse, and that in many instances destitute applicants for admission. including men, women and helpless infants, were allowed to lie for entire nights outside the gates, unpitied and unrelieved, exposed to the severity of the most inclement weather.'
There are men and women living to-day who can recall having seen these unfortunate creatures huddled together for the night outside the Workhouse gates on Lisburn Road.
In our young youth, when our boyhood's friend, Joe Devlin was in charge of Kelly's Store in Bank Lane, we remember climbing with him to the loft above the shop to see and examine the great rolls of painted canvas, the rollers and the blocks and tacklings of all that was left of Dr. Corry's World-Famed `Diorama.' For many years it lay in the loft above the old store in Bank Lane, but what became of it we do not know.
