For the collectors outside of the New Orleans area, who are not familiar with the Mardi Gras doubloon-coin-token-medal as some collectors may call them, they were first made in 1960 by a die-maker by the name of H.Alvin Sharpe. Since then they have been sought after and collected all over the world, for their many themes, gods, sports, movie star and famous people, etc. The front of each doubloon has the Krewe (Club) name and the back has the theme for that year. The aluminums come in different colors, silver aluminum, gold, green, purple, red, blue etc. Some of the aluminum doubloons are thrown from Mardi Gras floats during their annual parade during the Mardi Gras season in the New Orleans area. Others are made to give to special friends at the parade or during their annual ball as a favor. These doubloon-coins are becoming very scarce and hard to find, as they are in demand by collectors all over the world.
