Historical Note:
Dr. Mathew Thornton started his practice in Derry and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
General John Stark, a Derry native, is well known for his actions at Bunker Hill, Trenton, Princetown, and Bennington.
Alan B. Shepard, also a Derry native, was America's first man in space on May 5, 1961.

The log cabin on the grounds of Derry Presbyterian Church is the oldest building in this part of Pennsylvania. It was constructed of hand-hewn logs in the year in which George Washington was born - 1732. It is a monument to the devotion and loyalty of pioneer Americans to their church.

Donegal to top

Virtually all Scots-Irish immigrants from County Donegal, Ireland, chose the Susquehanna River area in northwestern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for settlement in the early 1700s and named the area Donegal. In 1721 they founded Donegal Presbyterian Church, undoubtedly the oldest continuously operating church in the area.
