Listings of all the preceptories - names/number/district
which I have been able to find are listed by district and in numerical order.
A printable
Print many of the tokens illustrated here.
br=brass, bz=bronze, Cu=copper, Sn=tin, Al=aluminium, Zn=zinc
"|" stands for
a line break. If this is in the outer legend, it indicates the
lettering is "upside down" with
respect to the earlier lettering
"=" indicates the following data is in the field
If you can supply illustrations of any other "pennies" please do so.
This listing is subject to copyright, however, it can be distribute freely to other collectors providing;-
1) It is supplied free of charge and not attached to any other listings.

The Royal Black Institution was formed in Ireland in 1797.
These are sometimes listed as Masonic pieces!
The Royal Black Preceptory consists of eleven degrees, as follows: - (1) Royal Black Degree |
I think each emblem on the tokens with a lamb represent each degree, and the holder will wear a badge depicting each symbol they have achieved on their sash, as I've seen a sash with the following badges.
a large rosette |
Why the Masonic influences? The following reply to an unknown question was found on a website;-
You see, the Orange Institution originated among men who were already Freemasons, so the easiest and most natural way for them to organise was in the context of their Masonic membership. Then later, when the Hanoverians were becoming uneasy about the proliferation of "assemblies" of political Radicals (very similar to current uneasiness about domestic terrorism), virtually all fraternal organisations were facing the very real danger of being considered subversive. The Orange, though staunchly loyal to the King, were perceived as no different in essence from any other Radical assembly, so steps were taken to "Masonify" the Orange Institution and associate it as much as possible with Freemasonry, a society which had already earned royal patronage.
This long-term association led to the Orange becoming consciously even more Masonic in general appearance. So, as Freemasonry has Royal Arch as an "extra" society, the Orange developed its own "extra" in the form of the Royal Arch Purple Degree (purple being the colour of loyalty in Masonic Royal Arch symbolism). And, since Freemasonry has the KTs as an even more senior Side Order, so the Royal Black Preceptory was formed as the equivalent chivalric order of Orangeism, taking the colour black which was associated with other orders of crusader knights, such as the Teutonic Knights. The Black's absorption of many Masonic elements, and the often mutual membership they have shared, has led to illogical adoptions in symbolism, such as the Apron and Square-and-Compasses-with-G.
