Scroll through the data or use the shortcut index below.

Listings of all the preceptories - names/number/district
which I have been able to find are listed by district and in numerical order.

A printable single page summary and a printable 20 page illustrated listing are on the CDROM.

Print many of the tokens illustrated here.

br=brass, bz=bronze, Cu=copper, Sn=tin, Al=aluminium, Zn=zinc

"|" stands for a line break. If this is in the outer legend, it indicates the
lettering is "upside down" with respect to the earlier lettering
"=" indicates the following data is in the field

I have those varieties marked with a *.

If you can supply illustrations of any other "pennies" please do so.

Royal / Imperial Grand / Provincial
Black Knights of Ireland tokens

The Royal Black Institution was formed in Ireland in 1797.

These are sometimes listed as Masonic pieces!

My sincere thanks to Gord Nichols
for permission to use his illustrations.
Most, if not all, the good illustrations are his.
Also to Marg & Len Trakalo email: ltrakalo@sympatico.ca for some illustrations

The Royal Black Preceptory consists of eleven degrees, as follows: -

(1) Royal Black Degree
(2) Royal Scarlet Degree
(3) Royal Mark Degree
(4) Apron and Royal Blue Degree
(5) Royal White Degree
(6) Royal Green Degree
(7) Gold Degree
(8) Star and Garter Degree
(9) Crimson Arrow Degree
(10) Link and Chain Degree
(11) Red Cross Degree
I think each emblem on the tokens with a lamb represent each degree, and the holder will wear a badge depicting each symbol they have achieved on their sash, as I've seen a sash with the following badges.
a large rosette
a red cross outlined in white
a circle of rings
an arrow
a 7 pointed star
a crown
a boat with a building (ark?)
a flying dove
a staff
a square & compasses with a "g" in the centre
6 black and 6 white squares
a triangle with skull and crossbones

Why the Masonic influences? The following reply to an unknown question was found on a website;-

You see, the Orange Institution originated among men who were already Freemasons, so the easiest and most natural way for them to organise was in the context of their Masonic membership. Then later, when the Hanoverians were becoming uneasy about the proliferation of "assemblies" of political Radicals (very similar to current uneasiness about domestic terrorism), virtually all fraternal organisations were facing the very real danger of being considered subversive. The Orange, though staunchly loyal to the King, were perceived as no different in essence from any other Radical assembly, so steps were taken to "Masonify" the Orange Institution and associate it as much as possible with Freemasonry, a society which had already earned royal patronage.
This long-term association led to the Orange becoming consciously even more Masonic in general appearance. So, as Freemasonry has Royal Arch as an "extra" society, the Orange developed its own "extra" in the form of the Royal Arch Purple Degree (purple being the colour of loyalty in Masonic Royal Arch symbolism). And, since Freemasonry has the KTs as an even more senior Side Order, so the Royal Black Preceptory was formed as the equivalent chivalric order of Orangeism, taking the colour black which was associated with other orders of crusader knights, such as the Teutonic Knights. The Black's absorption of many Masonic elements, and the often mutual membership they have shared, has led to illogical adoptions in symbolism, such as the Apron and Square-and-Compasses-with-G.

Orangeism Australia/New Zealand

Orangeism was introduced to Australia in 1835 through a Warrant sown into the tunic of a soldier, Andrew Alexander, of the 50th Queens Own Regiment. In 1845 this Lodge admitted the first civilians into its ranks and began the development of the Institution across Australia. Today we have Lodges in all the states of that great country.
It was through immigration that the Orange Institution was introduced to New Zealand in the 1840's and by the 1870's it had grown to such an extent that the Grand Lodge of New Zealand was born. New Zealand was the first Orange jurisdiction in the Southern Hemisphere to host the world governing body the 'Imperial Orange Council' when it met in Auckland in 1994.
The Orange Institution was probably introduced into West Africa through a combination of military personnel and missionaries. The first Lodges were formed in Nigeria at the beginning of the last century. From there it spread into Togo and Ghana. The political situation in West Africa has meant many difficulties for our members there but they have persevered and ultimate recognition came in 1994 when the first African (and coincidentally the first French Speaker) Emmanuel Aboki Essien was elected Imperial President of the Imperial Council.
In each of the countries mentioned the Orange Institution is relevant to the people of that country and is not an organisation for displaced Ulster or Irish men and women. It is this great movement of Orangeism across the world encapsulating faith, determination, and commitment that is the Institution's hope for the future.

Royal Black Preceptory

These lodges are affiliated to the Orange Order, but are sometimes listed as Masonic.
They seem to have the same motto as The Total Abstinence movement etc. (I have been told In Hoc ... isn't their motto, although it does appears on a Black website and on at least one of the tokens illustrated above!)

These lodges are affiliated to the Orange Order - see their www site - extract below. I guess many lodges exist and might have issued similar pieces, so there is hope for a large series of semi-Irish pieces.

The Provincial Grand Black Chapter of Eastern Ontario was formed in 1871, under the sovereign body of the Grand Black Chapter of British America within Canada.

The aim and purpose of the Royal Black Institution in Canada is as follows:

Sir Knights of the Order Believe:

Historical Background

The Royal Black Preceptory is a higher order of the Loyal Orange Institution reserved for members who have attained the Royal Arch Purple Marksman Degree.
The Loyal Orange Institution originated in Ireland in 1795, as a fraternal society among the Protestants of County Armagh. Named in honor of King William III of England, Prince of Orange, lodges were established in most Protestant centres of Ireland by 1800, England and Canada by 1808, and among Ulster immigrants in New York City by 1867. Rapid growth in the society led to the establishment of a Grand Lodge for the United States in 1870. By 1873 there were 100 lodges claiming a national membership of 10,000, growing to 364 lodges and 30,000 members by 1914.
The society was founded on the principles of Protestantism, patriotism, and preservation of the concept of separation of church and state. Membership was restricted to Protestant men eighteen years of age and older, who professed a life of temperance. Though not exclusive to a particular ethnic group, most members are Scotch-Irish or of Scotch-Irish ancestry.
Originally organized as a fraternal secret society, over the years the Loyal Orange Institution in the U.S. has become philanthropic in practice. In 1902, the Orange Home was founded in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, as a residence for orphans. It became a retirement home in 1948, with renovations and additions being made in 1964 and 1974.
