Scroll through the data or use the shortcut
index below.
|
br=brass, bz=bronze, Cu=copper, Sn=tin, Al=aluminium, Zn=zinc
"|" stands for
a line break. If this is in the outer legend, it indicates the
lettering is "upside down" with
respect to the earlier lettering
"=" indicates the following data is in the field
I have those marked with an asterisk.
Items illustrated without "*" are from
rubbings or photocopies.
If you can supply any missing illustrations, please do so.
A full listing of basic types of all L&N checks
i.e. from Ireland and England, Scotland, Wales & Isle of Man
is on the CD.

LONDON & NEWCASTLE TEA CHECKS
ref Andison & Heaney
I have those dies listed in black. Known dies are in red
The following advertising cards ex F.E.Dixon via Emil Szauer.
"Tea clipper loading from inland craft - sunset"
"Drying and rolling the leaf - evening"

A L&N shop - in Blyth, England which issued at least one check.
From the website
http://www.picsofblyth.co.uk/past4.htm courtesy of Keith Richardson.
I need to add; directory page, modern dublin tea packet
On the obverse of all pieces (ie the side with the outlet's address)
the legend is
"Throughout England Scotland & Ireland"
except for 1876 dated pieces, where the legend reads
"Throughout North of England & Scotland".
Much useful background information can be found in Francis
Heaney's 1976 article published in Irish Numismatics No
52, and Andrew Andisons paper in the British & Irish
Tokens Journal Vol 1 No 1 (Aug 1980), from which most of
the following is derived.
Since the above two papers, more die varieties and c/ms have come to
light and they have been described and catalogued, with
die numbers, by Andrew D. N. Andison in The London
& Newcastle Tea Company Checks (updated 1993).
Ceelom? indicates the indistinct signature
possibly Adams, Adoms Aelom Ceelom etc?
Many pieces have been countermarked
- see separate file on CD-ROM.

Seaby, in a note to
AN:B36 stated that 11 North St Belfast had 'become'
the London & Counties Tea Co. by 1877 (..1884..),
and was vacant by 1892. Heaney first listed the Belfast
address as 11 North St, in IN52, and this seems to have
been accepted by Seaby in IN77. However, a Kelly's
directory of 1879 contained an advertisement for the
L&N chain, and the Belfast address was given as 169 &
171 North St, as shown on the 1lb check. Did they move
from No 11 or was the similar tea company name mistaken
for the L&N one?

The bar forming the quarter is large and near vertical, and looks more like a price ie perhaps it means 1 shilling and 4 pence a pound tea!
An American auction listed a 1/4lb piece from here but 24mm - an error?

This was advertised as Gilt Bronze, but it looks like plain brass to me.

The 17 on these tokens looks as though LI upside down was used.
Another dealer advertised a countermarked piece (possibly an "X" beneath the shamrock in the lower pic.) - if it is a c/m, it's a very small one.

Brett's "Dublin tea tokens"
were listed in Whytes auction catalogue late 1999.
While the above may be from an Irish tea company, another possibility might be a company which has some of its records lodged in the Historical Manuscripts Commission, UK National Register of Archives;-
Bretts Stamping Co Ltd, drop forgers, Coventry, West Midlands 1897-1976: directors' minutes, agenda and attendance books, share registers, annual accounts. (Private) see HMC Records of British business & industry 1760-1914 metal processing and engineering, 1994, 20th cent : order book Coventry Archives see Annual report 1987-88
However the discrepency between "Brett's" on the token and "Bretts" probably rules them out! It is strange to have a company with a single name which has an apostrophy.

Mr Silke went to Galway from Kilconnell early in the 20th C. In 1906 he opened his provisions and grocery business. To commemorate the event, these tickets were issued and could be redeemed by customers for tea. A number of these were handed out in the week preceding the opening. They were later passed to regular customers as a form of discount.

end of data
The London and Newcastle even gets a mention in James Joyce's Ulysses
"... Ill get a bit of fish tomorrow or today is it Friday yes I will with some blancmange with black currant jam like long ago not those 2 lb pots of mixed plum and apple from the London and Newcastle Williams and Woods goes twice as far only for the bones I hate those eels cod yes Ill get a nice piece of cod Im always getting enough for 3 forgetting anyway Im sick of that everlasting butchers meat from Buckleys..." Chapter 18 page 7 (a part of the book without punctuation!)
Does Williams and Woods refers to the long gone halfpennies (or a fish shop of that name?).

WATERFORD SOLDIER'S DEATH
We have heard with regret of the death of Corporal Timothy Reagan of the Royal Irish Regiment which took place at Farnborough. The deceased, previous to the time he joined the army, was engaged as assistant at the London and Newcastle Tea Company's Waterford establishment and also at their Tramore and other branches. He was quite a young man and his bright and genial disposition won friends for him wherever he went. He had been for some time in England, and was injured by a piece of shrapnel from a bomb dropped by a Zepplin. He was operated on two or three times, but unfortunately succombed to his injuries. His many friends in Waterford will learn with regret of his demise.
