5¢ green, 10¢ blue, 25¢ red & 50¢ pink | |||
Food stamps 4 Plastic tokens from New York There is an Irish neighbourhood in Woodside! Sadly the eBay seller would only ship to USA. The plastic food stamp program began in the 1970s when the government decreed that change be given in food stamp credit tokens rather than in coins to reduce the possibility of fraud. Thus, 1.125 inch plastic tokens were issued in various colors, with each color representing a different denomination black or yellow for 1¢, green for 5¢, blue for 10¢, red for 25¢ and pink for 50¢. The other side of each token was inscribed with the name of the store where it could be redeemed. This led to a bureaucratic nightmare that was more trouble than it was worth. And so, these plastic tokens were quickly withdrawn and destroyed. |

Someone left a request on the Pittsburg Numismatic Society site for info on W.W.Woodside which resulted in the following two postings; Richard Crosby wrote;- I had the distinct pleasure of knowing Bill Woodside the chief curator at the Carnegie Museum in the Coins & Medal Dept. in the 1960's & 1970's. He was one of the most knowledgable people who you would ever want to meet. A fine gentlemen. Ragaetano wrote;- He was a member of W.P.N.S. for many years and worked with the collection of coins at Carnegie Library. He issued a medal with his name on for the 100th anniversary of W.P.N.S. |
